Mel Ricks, RN, CCRN

CVICU Clinical Supervisor at AAMC | ECMO Specialist | Critical Care Nursing Leader

Mel Ricks is a seasoned critical care nurse with over 30 years of clinical expertise, specializing in cardiothoracic care, ECMO, and mechanical circulatory support services. Throughout her career, Mel has demonstrated a deep commitment to advancing patient care and improving healthcare outcomes, making her an invaluable leader in the critical care field.

Mel began her career at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC, where she spent 15 years in the cardiothoracic ICU. She honed her clinical skills in a high-acuity environment before moving to The George Washington University Medical Center, where she spent the next 18 years. During her time at GW, Mel was recognized for her leadership in expanding the cardiovascular surgery program, introducing both adult ECMO and mechanical circulatory support services, and establishing the hospital’s first Ventricular Assist Device program. Her innovative staffing models supported over 80 ECMO cases annually, cementing her reputation as a pioneer in extracorporeal life support (ECLS).

As a certified ECMO specialist trained at the University of Michigan, Mel also played a critical role in the development of one of the region’s only mobile cannulation/ECMO transport teams, further enhancing the hospital’s ability to provide timely and effective care. Her contributions to the field of ECMO and her dedication to advancing critical care nursing have earned her national recognition. She has presented abstracts at numerous ELSO conferences and served as a co-director for the annual ECLS symposium, where healthcare professionals from across the nation collaborate to share best practices and improve outcomes.

In addition to her clinical expertise, Mel is a passionate mentor and educator, having received several peer-appointed awards, including Critical Care Nurse of the Year, Outstanding Preceptor, and the Nursing Profession’s Daisy Award. Now serving as a CVICU Clinical Supervisor at AAMC, she continues to focus on enhancing team performance, maintaining the highest standards of care, and supporting the professional growth of nursing staff.
